What we do

We are a specialist air ambulance and rescue helicopter service with decades of experience helping the people of Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel.

Our professional crews are focused on caring for people when they need us most. Pilots, copilots, air crew officers, critical care paramedics and doctors work together to provide specialised, safe pre-hospital clinical and critical care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

It is through the generous support of our loyal community, donors and sponsors that Northern Rescue receives the funding and resources required for ongoing innovation in aeromedical clinical care.  Using the latest technology allows us to deliver a professional and modern rescue helicopter service that saves lives.

Clinical education & training

Because of our unique mix of clinical staff, our clinical practices adhere to a combination of:

  • National Clinical Practice Guidelines
  • Accepted practice and relevant guidelines from specialist medical training in emergency medicine, intensive care medicine and anaesthesia.
  • Internally authorised Standard Operating Procedures which we aim to regularly review and update.

All our clinicians are registered health professionals with the Medical Council of New Zealand or the Paramedic Council of New Zealand.

Our doctors are registered (either vocationally or generally) with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Vocationally registered doctors are specialists in either:

  • Emergency Medicine (Fellowship of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine - ACEM)
  • Intensive Care Medicine (Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine - CICM)
  • Anaesthesia (Fellowship of the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthesia – ANZCA)

We are the only aeromedical service in the country providing a training fellowship in Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine. This training fellowship is accredited for training doctors with the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.
