With the anticipated arrival of the AW169 helicopters in Northland, we've expanded our training capability with a state-of-the-art AW169 flight simulator, now based at Whangārei. The new simulator replaces the previous Sikorsky simulator and ensures our pilots can train on the same aircraft they will be flying on missions.

A flight simulator is a full-size replica of a helicopter cockpit that recreates real flying conditions using advanced computer technology. It allows pilots to practise everything from routine flying to complex emergency scenarios in a safe, highly realistic environment—without ever leaving the ground.

Using cutting-edge LED display technology, the simulator creates an immersive flying experience that closely replicates real-life conditions. Pilots can practise search and rescue missions, offshore operations, night flying, instrument flying and emergency procedures, as well as complete the regular competency checks required to keep their licences current.

The simulator allows crews to rehearse challenging scenarios repeatedly, refining their decision-making and responses until they become second nature. Because these exercises take place on the ground, pilots can safely train for situations that would be difficult, costly or impractical to recreate in the air.

The benefits extend beyond training. By reducing the need for training flights in operational helicopters, the simulator significantly lowers operating costs, reduces wear and tear on aircraft, and keeps more helicopters available for emergency missions.
